What is DBT?
Struggling with intense emotions, big reactions, or tough relationships? Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) might help.
DBT is a type of therapy that teaches practical, real-life skills to help you manage emotions, handle stress, and improve how you relate to others. It was originally created for people experiencing intense emotions and exhibiting harmful behaviour, but has since been modified to support a wide range of concerns including anxiety, depression, self-harm, or just feeling overwhelmed.
The Basics of DBT
Mindfulness: improving your ability to be present in the moment
Distress tolerance: increasing your tolerance for difficult emotions, rather than trying to escape or avoid them
Emotional regulation: skills used to manage and shift emotion(s) that are intense and creating difficulties for you
Interpersonal effectiveness: skills that help you communicate with others in a way that's assertive and strengthens relationships.

DBT works by combining Mindfulness with Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT). Mindfulness helps you to understand and accept difficult emotions without judgment, while CBT provides the tools you need to change unhelpful thought patterns.
